Scott Sandler
Senior Process Risk Consultant; ABS Consulting
Scott Sandler has worked in the petrochemical industry for more than 20 years with manufacturing companies such as ARCO Chemical/Lyondell, Air Liquide, INVISTA and ABS Consulting. His responsibilities have included process design, manufacturing technical support and process safety management for plants producing propylene oxide and its derivatives, such as butanediol, air gas production and handling and other chemical intermediates, such as nylon precursors.
While involved in process design, he performed many safety related functions such as authoring reactor pressure relief models for highly reactive chemicals and two-phase and supercritical fluid pressure relief valve design. In his roles in the process safety management (PSM) arena, his responsibilities have involved leading process hazards, layers of protection and fault tree analyses, PSM compliance auditing, interfacing with control system engineers in the design of safety instrumented systems and training. The processes involved hazardous chemicals such as olefins, ethylene and propylene oxide, ammonia, chlorine and hydrogen cyanide.
Sandler is currently a senior process risk consultant for ABS Consulting, continuing to lead risk reduction and PSM compliance activities. He currently teaches the Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) courses.
