Mark Manton, PhD

Principal Engineer; ABS Consulting

Mark Manton has 30 years’ experience in Oil and Gas. After acquiring a PhD in Chemical Engineering at MIT, he spent 25 years with Shell in: Amsterdam (NL), The Hague (NL), Bintulu (Malaysia), Rouen (France), Chester (UK) and London (UK). His last role in Shell was as Process Safety Manager at Shell’s Stanlow refinery. During that time he was part of, and for 2 years chaired, the United Kingdom Petroleum Industry Association’s (UKPIA’s) Process Safety Leadership Network, the main interface between the sector and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Environmental Agency (EA). This also included active involvement in working groups covering Human Factors, Buncefield follow-up and environmental risk assessments and therefore extensive experience working with the UK HSE and demonstrating that the residual risks have been reduced to ALARP.

Mark joined ABS Group 7 years ago and has since consulted with, or delivered training to, Shell (Nigeria and 4 European sites), US-BSEE, KPC, Syngenta, Takreer, Valero, Wood Group, Calor, Slovnaft, Hexcel, Evonik, Merck, SBM Offshore, GKN, Johnson Matthey, etc. He was a key member of the committee for the 2018 CCPS/Energy Institute book, "Bow Ties in Risk Management," and has presented/co-authored papers at the AIChE's GCPS conferences in 2016/7 and the IChemE's Hazards conferences in 2014/6/7/8/9.
