ABS Group Launches Cal/OSHA PSM Regulation for Refineries Toolkit

NEWS ADVISORY--Effective October 1, 2017, California refiners are required to comply with the recently revised process safety management (PSM) regulation to minimize process safety hazards at petroleum refineries. ABS Group, a leading process safety and risk management advisor for more than 40 years, has launched the Cal/OSHA PSM Regulation for Refineries Toolkit, a guidance resource which comprises information tools and webinars related to the upcoming standard requirements from the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA). 

ABS Group's toolkit promotes increased knowledge-sharing from leading process safety experts by combining video recordings, technical presentations and articles into an integrated resource to help refiners understand how to comply with the PSM Regulation. Key technical focus areas include performing process safety culture assessments, addressing damage mechanism review, safeguard protection analysis, facility siting and human factors, among others.

This information resource builds on the success of ABS Group's webinars as well as the Company's reputation as the lead and/or contributing author of many of the most commonly referenced process safety texts published by the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), including Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety (2007, CCPS) and Guidelines for Implementing Process Safety Management, 2nd Edition (2016, CCPS). Included in the toolkit are practical insights compiled by Steve Arendt, Vice President of ABS Group's Global Oil, Gas and Chemical division. Arendt has worked with several industry groups to develop technical positions dealing with OSHA's PSM regulation (29 CFR 1910.119) and the EPA's risk management program rule (40 CFR Part 68) and has been an active participant in these rulemakings.  

In addition, ABS Group's Risk and Safety Management advisors based in California, Tennessee and Texas have prepared expert-led PSM guidance for complying with EPA/OSHA regulations. Since 2016, the ABS Group Process Safety and Advanced Engineering teams have conducted webinars and shared regulatory insights to help organizations understand the upcoming regulatory changes.
